What is DLA?
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit in the form of money for people who have extra care needs or mobility needs (difficulty getting around) due to a disability. There are two parts called components: the care component and the mobility component. You may qualify for one or both of these.
It is administered by the Department for Work and Pensions.
Are you eligible for DLA?
Disability Living Allowance is being discontinued by the government and is gradually being replaced with Personal Independence Payment. You can still continue to claim DLA if the you meet the following criteria:
- You were before 8 April 1948 and are currently claiming DLA
- Your claim is in behalf of a disabled person who is under 16
There are two components within claiming DLA – the ‘care component’ and the ‘mobility component’. You will need to show that you meet either or both of these.
Care Component
You may be eligible for this if you need help or supervision with tasks such as getting dressed, cooking a meal for yourself or going to the toilet. This may also include requiring help outside the home. It does not matter if you do not have anyone who helps you, the key is to show your need for it.
Mobility Component
If you cannot walk, or walk with difficulty – you have mobility needs. This could be due to a physical or mental disability. It does not matter if you do not have anyone who helps you, the key is to show your need for it.
What are the current rates?

| Middle rate | £61.85 | Regularly need help day or night |
| Lowest rate | £24.45 | Specific help some of the day or for certain tasks |
| Mobility component | Weekly rate | How much support you need |
| High rate | £64.50 | After walking for a short period of time you feel breathless, dizzy or unsteady. You may not be able to walk outdoors |
| Low rate | £24.45 | You need help when walking outdoors in unfamiliar places because of physical or mental disability e.g dementia or deafness |
